Crete: 8-Day Self-Drive – Minoan Sites, Beaches & Venetian Towns
Crete is an island of distinct regions rather than a single resort experience. This eight-day self-drive begins around Heraklion, turns east towards Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, crosses the south coast to Matala, then continues west for Chania and Rethymno. Seven hotel nights with breakfast, an eight-day rental car and liability insurance are included. Archaeological sites, island cruises, beaches and local food experiences remain flexible, allowing you to shape each day around opening times, weather and your own interests.

Itinerary
Arrive in Heraklion
Collect the rental car at Heraklion Airport during the confirmed desk hours and drive to the first accommodation. Depending on arrival time, explore Heraklion's Venetian harbour, old centre or Archaeological Museum independently.
Knossos, Elounda and Agios Nikolaos
Visit Knossos independently if it suits your schedule, then travel east towards Agios Nikolaos. A winery stop, Plaka and a boat trip to Spinalonga can be added separately; allow enough time for fixed opening and sailing times.
Agios Nikolaos at leisure
Use a flexible day for beaches and the area around Agios Nikolaos, or take a longer independent drive towards eastern Crete. Any museum, monastery or beach visit is optional and should be chosen with realistic return time.
Agios Nikolaos to Matala
Cross towards Crete's south coast and continue to Matala. Break the longer drive with one carefully chosen coastal or inland stop, then settle into the seaside village for the night.
Matala to Chania
Travel west towards Chania. Phaistos, Preveli or Frangokastello can be considered independently, but attempting all suggested stops would make the day impractical. Arrive in Chania and explore the Venetian harbour and old town at leisure.
Chania and western Crete
Spend a second day around Chania. Choose an optional seasonal cruise to Gramvousa and Balos, an independently arranged visit to Elafonisi, or a slower day in the city and nearby coast.
Chania to Rethymno
Drive east to Rethymno, with an optional botanical-garden stop if time and opening dates permit. Explore the Fortezza, Venetian harbour and old-town lanes before the final overnight.
Departure from Heraklion
Drive to Heraklion Airport, refuel and return the rental vehicle within the confirmed desk hours before departure.
Clarity before you travel.
Accommodation
Seven nights with breakfast are included: one in the Heraklion area, two around Agios Nikolaos, one in Matala, two in the Chania area and one in Rethymno. The source properties are examples only, and several are outside the historic centres named in the itinerary. Confirm the exact address, parking and room category for every departure.
Transport
Transport and getting around
This is an independent island self-drive with a category B Fiat Panda or similar for eight days. Collection and return are stated as Heraklion Airport between 08:00 and 21:00; out-of-hours service costs extra. The final record must also specify insurance cover and excess, deposit, mileage, fuel policy, additional drivers, roadside assistance and ferry restrictions.
Important Information
Before you book
- Knossos, museums, Spinalonga transport, cruises, tastings and other attractions are suggestions and are not included unless added separately.
- Balos, Gramvousa and other boat services are seasonal and weather-dependent.

- Crete’s mountain and coastal roads can be slower than the distance suggests; avoid overloading driving days.
- The climate-resilience levy is locally payable at the hotel at the rate in force when travelling.
